Heat Waves

We are currently going through a heat wave now for the last 3 days. I always wondered why it was called a "heat wave" it neither waves like a person would nor moves like an ocean wave does. It stays with you so it should be called a heat shadow or heat spot. Any ideas anyone?

Last night we had a storm in 100 degree heat and we got hail stones the size of marbles? Biblical times indeed.!!!
